Starting in the website design and working my way through nearly every role in the marketing agency that I built (with the help of an extremely talented team), I eventually ended up running a sales team. As I built this department and trained our team a critical idea occurred to me. That training a sales person and writing marketing slogans for a website is essentially the same process. Working out how to refine and simplify the USP for that organization is a trainable skill that we neglect from training our website copy on!
After over 18 years running our design and marketing firm, the company was sold, and I moved over to another agency with need for building out a design team. I've been learning best practices for websites from the best in the research industry: Baymard Institute and Nielsen Norman Group, for over a decade. This training has informed my sales approach, which then also informed my design direction and content strategy. Because of this alternate approach, I ended up creating a CRO Design service that was far more effective due to the direct incorporation of A/B testing and analytic research as part of the design process. Many of our clients did not get a full redesign, but instead had a polish to their site messaging and styles. Make it look more modern and present a better sales pitch often does not require a full redesign. This meant that our clients saw improvements sooner and we knew exactly why they saw them.
We are now partnered with several agencies white-labeling the affordable CRO process that we have put together. This process changes the way that they look at design change and audience behavior. They are now bringing their sales team in to inform the design team. There is no magic bullet in web design, but this seems pretty close to it from most of our client's perspective.
We now have over 500 clients' we've provided content strategy consultation, website design upgrades and ultimately delivered uncommon growth from the design work we performed. I truly love consulting my clients to refine their message into the perfect elevator pitch and then helping make sure that every visitor experiences it on their website.
